FROM THE EDITORS DESK
Welcome to the April 2004 issue of The Pentashield.
This month we have three feature articles viz:
An article by Gerard Rivet on the very successful Dyno Day
An article on the frequency of Oil Changes for modern cars
A historical article which was the first known publication on Motoring
Together with the Committee Member reports we have some light relief
scattered throughout the magazine and I have included some photos of
interesting cars that were found during my research for a future
article.
I can report that we have received a veritable flood of
letters to the Editor. These are published on the next pages. The theme
of all the letters is in response to the letter by John Huntington,
published in the February issue. It is important to remember that it is
the right of all Club Members to express a personal opinion on any
topic connected with our common interest in Mopars. It is therefore the
responsibility of the Editor to provide a suitable forum, through the
magazine, for the expression of those opinions, even though they may be
controversial or extreme opinions.
I would like to take this opportunity to restate the Editorial Policy of this magazine.

Letters to the Editor
The Editor,
We would like to reply to the letter published in the February issue of the Pentashield.
Firstly, we agree that all members have the right to voice
their opinion via the forum of the club magazine. We also note that
these opinions are the opinions of the writer, and as such do not
necessarily reflect the general opinion of all club members nor do they
reflect on the official position of the club.
We, the organising committee of the Darling Harbour display
Day, were very disappointed at the cheap shot at our Major Sponsor and
their showing of the Chrysler Crossfire. We, as a club, are most
fortunate to have the backing of Chrysler-Jeep Australia, and their
support is paramount to the continuation of this event. For this
purpose we should do all we can to ensure the continued support of
Chrysler-Jeep Australia. References such as that published in the
February magazine does nothing to assist this committee in their task,
especially so when the letter was signed by a serving committee member
of this club.
Secondly, we refer to the reference to the “Valiant Gallant”
that was displayed on the day .We feel that whatever our club
constitution says about club membership is not applicable to what is
valid to display at a Chrysler show. The vehicle in question was in
very good presentable condition, and was displayed by a very avid
Chrysler enthusiast. The vehicle reflected what was a Chrysler of that
era. Not all Chryslers were Australian designed, or North American
built and this car was available from the Chrysler showroom, with
Chrysler warranty and Chrysler compliance. The same applies today with
the Chrysler Crossfire. We also noted that there were Chrysler Centuras
on display, yet no reference to them was mentioned in the letter.
Surely they fall into the same category that the writer was complaining
about.
It is obvious that as an organising committee we will need to
set up criteria for this event setting out what vehicles will be
eligible to enter. This will be done at the earliest convenience.
Regards,
Darling Harbour Organising Committee.
The Editor,
This letter is regarding the recent letter to the editor in the latest
Pentashield mailed out last week.
I am able to respect (but I don't necessarily agree with) John's views as to
what he considers to be a Chrysler vehicle suitable for display at the
Darling Harbour Display Day. What shocked me about the letter is John's
attack of our major sponsor of the day. In his letter, John referred to the
Chrysler Crossfire as the ‘Mercedes Backfire’.
It is my understanding that Chrysler-Jeep Australia put up $3000 of sponsorship
for the day and also provided the new Crossfire as a display vehicle - a
vehicle that we requested they bring along if possible. Seeing that John is
the club secretary and a member of the committee I believe it was very
irresponsible of John to publish his negative opinions of our major sponsors
product. Some of the blame must also fall on the editor, after all it is
his final decision to publish the contents of the letter.
I am of the belief such childish attacks on our sponsor could very well lead
to Chrysler-Jeep Australia choosing not to sponsor future events. That's fine
of course if John is willing to sponsor those events himself in future.
Anyway, the damage has been done; perhaps it is time to remedy the situation.
... Though that is for the committee to decide.

The Editor,
Please find below a copy of my Email to Joanne McCarthy at DaimlerChrysler Australia.
Re: Photos from our Darling Harbour Display Day
Hi Joanne,
I'm a humble club member. Thank you for
your support of our display day. It was very important to all of us.
Ray Web suggested that any of us who had photos of the beautiful
Crossfire should send them to you. I hope these are OK.
The young sales rep that came with the Crossfire was great. He
was very happy to chat about the car and Chrysler all day. His efforts
and support were great and he is to be commended. I am looking forward
to the C300 when it makes it to Australia. Sounds fantastic!
To attach these to the Email I have had to cut the file size.
If the detail is too low for you please let me know and I'll burn a
disk and post it to you.
Best Regards,
Hugh Savage
