Cast “Chrysler”, “Valiant” & “Charger” Body Mounted Badges
These badges were manufactured by metal casting, then chrome plating
and finishing with black paint on the letter edges. With time the black
paint flakes or wears off and the badges lose their letter definition
when viewed from the side. To restore the badges to an ‘as new’
condition do the following-:
? Remove all of the old paint with a suitable paint stripper. A toothbrush is useful here.
? Wash the badge thoroughly with cold running water - a
toothbrush is helpful to remove the entire paint stripper. Allow to air
dry.
? Place the badge on a flat surface and spray, left to right and then right to left with Etch Primer.
Turn the badge through 180 degrees and repeat the spray. Before
the etch primer is dry gently wipe the top of the badge with a tightly
rolled cloth soaked in acrylic paint thinner. Make sure that there is
not too much paint thinner in the rolled cloth. Allow the badge to
thoroughly dry. The chrome finish on the badge top should be bright and
shiny.
? Now, repeating the above spray procedure, spray the badge
with Matt Black Acrylic paint. Gently wipe the badge top with a tight
roll of cloth soaked in paint thinner. Make sure that the cloth is not
dripping paint thinner. Do not wipe the cloth too hard on the surface
as this will expose the etch primer undercoat on the edges of the
lettering. Allow to thoroughly dry. To finish, polish the chromed badge
lettering with chrome cleaner.
