When
the Charger was introduced to Australia in 1971 it featured an
inbuilt “Spoiler” or ‘Boat-tail” for the first time on any
Australian designed car. This feature subsequently became an
important facet of the public’s appreciation of the cars design.
However in adding this feature the cars designers were left with a
problem as there was nowhere on the cars rear surface to allow water
to drain from the body drain channel between the boot lid, the rear
window, the boat-tail and the rear quarter panels.
One
of the engineers at the Adelaide design facility had a bright idea
which provided a very simple solution – open a hole in the body
drain channel, at its lowest point at the rear, and weld a vertical
tube between the underside of the drain channel and the boot floor to
allow water to drain and escape underneath the vehicle!
This
was fitted on each side, at the rear of the boot lid, and it provided
an effective solution to the problem. Every Charger was manufactured
with this feature.
