Welcome to another events
report. Once again it has been a busy period with lots of events to cover.
Back in February we had our Darling Harbour Charity
Display Day. A big thanks to all the members who
helped out on the day and entered vehicles for the display. Big congratulations
for a job well done should also go to Ray Snr and Graham who did the bulk of
the work in organising and running this year’s event. It was another good day,
just a slight sprinkle of rain early on which cleared up quickly. The new
trophy system of only entrant’s choice worked well and saw the car of the show
go to a very well presented Chrysler Prowler. Our major sponsor Chrysler-Jeep Australia also provided a new
Chrysler 300C Hemi V8 for display which proved to be very popular and generated
a lot of interest.
Like I said earlier it was another busy period for us and
the following week after Darling Harbour had a good number of our members back
out to the Western Sydney International Dragstrip for
our 2nd drag day once again held in conjunction with the Falcon GT
Owners Club of NSW. The GT club did a great job of taking on the organisation
of this year’s event and the new ticketing system worked well for entrants and
spectators. The day took its toll on a number of vehicles with the ambient
temperature rising above 30C and track temperatures of over 60C. Despite these
extreme conditions our fellow club member John kept circulating all afternoon
in his 265 Hemi E48 VJ Charger and recording some impressive times long after
everyone else had given up and gone home. The hard luck award would have to go
to Joe who broke the Centura’s tail shaft on his first run of the day. We’ve
already talked with the GT club with regards to next year’s event with a view
of running it a little later in the year, most likely to be around April or
June.
The biggest event in the Australian Chrysler calendar had
come around again. With this years spotlight on the 35th anniversary
of the Charger, Chryslers on The Murray was bigger than ever. A record breaking
effort with over 430 vehicles entered for display on Sunday. For us it all
started in the early hours of Friday morning with a very wet departure for
Pheasants Nest at 5am. We
had a convoy of 5 vehicles, Marianne driving the Charger, Peters 440 Charger,
Tony’s VH Pacer, Kev’s newly registered VC V8 wagon
and my VG Pacer. It was a pleasant but slightly damp drive to Yass where we
stopped for breakfast. By the time we left Yass the skies had cleared and the
next stop was Holbrook for a quick visit to Scott and Rhonda’s place and then
the short trip from Holbrook to Albury. A few hours were spent tidying up the
vehicles after all the rain and roadworks and then we
were able to sit down and put our feet up and watch everyone else arrive.
Saturday morning was an early start for those eager for
bargains at the swap meet and for those of us silly enough to enter the Top 10
judging. At this point I must thank the guys and Maz for helping me get the
Pacer looking it’s best for the judging on Saturday – I couldn’t have done it
with out your help – Thankyou!!! Saturday afternoon and it was time for the run
out to the Ettamogah pub for the Charger photo shoot. It was quite a sight to see about 80
Chargers all parked together on the field. The evening saw a few of our members
head out to look for some unsanctioned events on the streets; word has it the
Mexicans went home with the trophy this year. Oh well, there’s always next
year…
Sunday Morning was upon us and after only a couple of
hours sleep several of our members were looking a bit worse for wear.
Our club
display on the other hand was one of the best we have had - with 18
cars in
attendance. A big effort was put in by Joe who bought both the Centura
and the Dodge convertible. The number of vehicles on display and
the
overall quality was outstanding. The only problem is that there just
isn’t
enough time to look at them all in detail.
The Albury-Wodonga Chrysler Club deserve huge
congratulations on holding such a fantastic event – well done, it’s a credit to
all your club members.
If you haven’t been to the clubs website lately, drop by
and check out all the pictures from COTM (over 500 photos), Darling Harbour
and the Drag Day.
Don’t forget about this years
Dyno Day, Sunday 7th May, once again at Mick’s Motorsport
in Milperra. Mick has supported us for a couple of years now and offers
excellent advice for getting our cars running at their best. Thanks to Mick’s
generosity the price remains the same at $35 for pre-entrants which also
includes a BBQ lunch and drinks for entrants. If you don’t have one already
entry forms are available from the web site.
I have received entry details to this year’s Motorex. The organisers are doing things a little
differently this year. Rather than take a single entry from the club we must
enter all the vehicles for the club display individually. It would be nice if
we had a couple of new/different cars for this year so if you are interested in
displaying your vehicle over the weekend please get in contact with me ASAP.
Regards,
Nik
